Most of the monuments of interest in Castellon are located around the Town Hall. Starting from there, we find the co-cathedral of Santa Maria, which is guarded by the Fadri, an independent octagonal tower with a clock and a bell tower. The Post Office building is another of the monuments of singular presence in the city. The Lonja, the Principal Theatre, the Fine Arts Museum and the Mare de Déu del Lledó Basilica are other buildings you must visit and see.

If you like to enjoy the mysteries of the cosmos and the stars, you must visit the Planetarium, one of the most visited buildings in the Valencian community, with its 25-metre-high dome that invites you to observe the space. A few kilometres away is the chapel of Santa María del Castell Vell and the ruins of the castle of La Magdalena and the chapel of San Jaime de Fadrell, home to the Municipal Museum of Ethnology.

The Columbretes Islands, 56 kilometres off the coast of Castellón, are a volcanic spectacle of incredible natural beauty that is well worth getting to know. This time on the mainland, between Castellón and Benicasim is the Desierto de las Palmas, a landscape of great ecological interest.

If you like good music, the best time to visit Castellón is in July when the Benicasim Festival is held, an event that attracts people from all over Spain with a line-up of the best exponents of the world electronic, indie, pop and Spanish rock scene.

The most important festival in the city is held between March and April, we are talking about the Magdalena, a traditional festival that includes the Romería de les Canyes and the Parade of the Gaiatas, a good time to get to know the culture of Castellón.

At a reasonable distance from the town centre is the port of Grao, which leads to the beach of El Pinar and its exquisite restaurants. The beaches of Gurugú and Serradal are quite lively.

Benicasim

Whether it’s for the music, the beaches, the desert or all of the above, you should visit Benicasim just 14 kilometres from the centre of Castellón, home during the month of July to one of the most important music festivals in the Valencian community. 

The most outstanding monument is the church of Santo Tomás de Villanueva and the ruins of the castle of Montornés. Although the most outstanding feature is the Desert de las Palmas natural area, a space of great ecological interest, and the beaches of the Torre de San Vicente and the Almadraba beach, both of which have been awarded the European blue flag for their quality.

Peñíscola

Just over 50 minutes away is Peñíscola, a film destination, literally speaking. Several locations in the city were the setting for the famous HBO series, Game of Thrones. There is no doubt that the most striking image of Peñíscola is its castle on top of the rock. 

The former residence of several pontiffs is only surpassed by the Alhambra in terms of the number of people who visit it each year. The Bufador is a curious space on the ground that spits out salt water when the tide rises more than normal. The door of Santa María, the parish church of the Virgen del Socorro and the hermitage of the Virgen de la Ermitana are other monuments of great historical and artistic value. 

The Museum of the Sea has a permanent exhibition of anchors, model boats and bronze hulls that reflect Peñíscola’s seafaring tradition. Continuing on to the sea, the North beach is an excellent option for enjoying the Mediterranean, with its distinction as a European blue flag beach due to its quality.
