Toledo is always moving, its monuments receive visitors all year round. However, Holy Week is a good time for you to witness first-hand the fervour with which the people of Toledo venerate their religious symbols.

Spain is enjoyable to walk around, the old town of Toledo is no exception, in fact, it will require you to be in good physical shape, as it is located on seven hills and guarded by the Tajo River. As you go along, its narrow streets will reveal the layers of its Arab, Jewish and Christian past.

The Cathedral is a monument you must visit almost out of obligation. The Alcazar, located on the highest hill in the old town, is another jewel you must see. The Museum-Hospital of Santa Cruz has a permanent exhibition of pieces that reveal the multicultural past of this city and some of El Greco’s works.

A very photogenic picture of Toledo is the Alcantara bridge over the waters of the Tajo River with the imposing castle as a backdrop. 

The church of Santo Tomé has a much admired attraction, the painting The Burial of the Count of Orgaz, painted by El Greco. Right opposite is the House-Museum of El Greco, where many of the works of El Greco, Murillo and Valdés Leal are kept.

The Sephardic Museum houses an exhibition of pieces that show the presence of Sephardic Jews on the European continent. Leaving the Jewish quarter you can enjoy one of the most representative buildings of the city, the monastery of San Juan de los Reyes.

• El Toboso
  Much has been heard about Dulcinea, Don Quixote mentions her many times and many times he idealizes her between the Beauty and the Virtue of that woman from the bowels of La Mancha. A visit to the House of Dulcinea is an opportunity to enter fully into the world of Don Quixote, as it reproduces the house of La Mancha from the time of the knight Hidalgo. At the Cervantino centre, you can see several editions of Don Quixote in various languages and signed by important political and intellectual figures.
• Madridejos
  This town is mentioned by Don Quixote on his way to Puerto Lápice. It has a mill known as Uncle Genaro’s Mill, one of the best preserved in all of La Mancha.
• Consuegra
  Consuegra also forms part of the ideology of El Quijote, in your visit you will notice how the Templar castle on the hill and the eleven windmills stand out, from the top of the hill you will be able to have one of the best views of the wide plains of La Mancha. The hermitage of Vera Cruz, the palace of San Gumersindo and the church of San Juan Bautista are other monuments that you must see in your visit to Consuegra.

• Talavera de la Reina
  Less than an hour’s drive from the centre of Toledo is Talavera de la Reina, a city in the province of Toledo with a very ancient tradition of pottery making. A pottery from Talavera de la Reina, is undoubtedly an excellent souvenir to remember your trip to La Mancha.

  During your visit to the old town, you should visit the walls and the Albarán Tower that protected the city, as well as the basilica of Nuestra Señora del Prado and the beautiful tiles that decorate it. The time is right to visit “La Caprichosa”, its curious bullring.

  Other important monuments you must visit are the church of Santiago el Nuevo, and the church of Santiago el Viejo, seen from the inside, you can enjoy the magnificent tiles that decorate its walls. Before finishing your visit, you must pass by the school of Santo Domingo, the convent of the Barefoot Carmel and the medieval bridge over the Tajo River.

• Cuerva
  Only 30 kilometres from the centre of Toledo is the town of Cuerva, a town that stands out for its Manchego cheeses and for having welcomed the poet Garcilaso de la Vega among its inhabitants. During your visit you should visit the castle and the gothic parish built in the 15th century.
• Esquivias
  Esquivias is a purely Cervantine town, located 40 kilometres from the centre of Toledo. Here, the house in which Miguel de Cervantes lived in the 16th century is preserved in great detail. During your visit to Esquivas, you should also visit the Capuchin convent, the church of Asunción and the chapel of San Roque.
• Illescas
  This town in La Mancha preserves an elm tree that is over 500 years old in its Plaza de las Cadenas, the church of Nuestra Señora de la Caridad, the hospital, the parish church of Santa María, and the arch of Ugena are monuments of great historical and cultural importance. Nevertheless, the sanctuary is the object of the greatest attention, as it preserves a pictorial collection attributed to El Greco, the work as a whole being known as the Glorification of Mary.
• Orgaz
  El Greco’s genius was immortalised during the burial of the Count of Orgaz, undoubtedly one of his masterpieces. Only 30 kilometres by car separate Orgaz from the centre of Toledo. During your visit you should visit Orgaz Castle, built in the 14th century, as well as the Cinco Ojos Bridge, the parish church of Santo Tomás Apóstol and the San Lorenzo hospital.
