Once you arrive at the Barrio de las Letras you will notice a trail of the great writers, Góngora, Quevedo and Lope de Vega, are just some of the writers who lived in this area of Madrid. In the Plaza de las Cortes you will find the monument to the most universal of Spanish writers, Miguel de Cervantes.
The area of the museums, the Royal Palace and the Puerta del Sol
The Huertas district is the oldest area in Madrid. The street that gives the district its name is bohemian and nocturnal in nature, with an endless number of pubs, discos and restaurants. The illustrious Miguel de Cervantes lived in Las Huertas street, 18, and his remains rest in the convent of the Barefoot Trinitarians of San Ildefonso, popularly known as Las Trinitarias de Cervantes. Very close to this point is the city’s trilogy of museums: the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofía Museum and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum.
The Calle Mayor leads us to the Puerta del Sol, the starting point of all roads in Spain, also known as the ‘kilómetro cero’. Whether by chance or coincidence, the traditional New Year’s welcome is celebrated from this very square. In the square you will find Casa de Correos, today the seat of the Government of the Community of Madrid.
An obligatory stop in your visit to Madrid is the Parque del Retiro, a large garden of 118 hectares with more than 20,000 trees, located in the heart of the city. Its main attraction is a navigable lake and the Casa de Cristal. One of the symbols of the city, La Puerta de Alcalá, is just a stone’s throw away.
The area of the Paseos
The Paseo del Prado itself is impressive, because it houses several of the most representative pictures of the city of Madrid, one is the Plaza de Cibeles, with the monumental fountain of the goddess on the chariot pulled by two lions. Another is the fountain of Apollo, and the also monumental fountain of Neptune. As if this were not enough, it also houses two of the most visited museums in the world: the Prado Museum and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum; as well as the spectacular Botanical Garden.
The lion is a constant figure in Madrid’s architecture. The Congress of Deputies, located in the Plaza de las Cortes, is a clear example of this, and its façade, with its six columns and two bronze lions, guards the Spanish Constitution. In this same area, you can find the Teatro Real and the Cathedral of Almudena.
La Gran vía and Plaza España
The construction of the Gran Via marked the entry into the elite of the world’s great capitals. The Telefónica building was the first skyscraper in Madrid around 1929. Lovers of theatre and musicals have their space in the Gran Vía, in the section between Plaza de Callao and Plaza España.
