The Madrid-Barajas Airport is operated by AENA and is named Adolfo Suárez in honour of the first Spanish Prime Minister and a key figure in Spain’s transition to democracy between 1976 and 1981. The airport’s IATA code is MAD.
Although it was inaugurated in the early 1930s, the first commercial flight landed the Lufthansa aircraft in the spring of 1939. That same year and to date, the Spanish airline Iberia moves its equipment and headquarters to Madrid-Barajas Airport.
The facilities have four terminals T1, T2, T3 and T4; all connected by a free bus service offered by Aena. In addition to the Barajas district, the airport covers the municipalities of Alcobendas, San Sebastian de los Reyes and Jarama.
It is the most important airport in Spain with a flow of passengers exceeding 61 million and more than 426 thousand commercial flights per year; many of them to the major cities of Europe, such as, Lisbon, London, Roma, Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Brussels, Munich, Oporto, Ginebra, and Zurich.

Lines 101 and 200 also connect the airport with various points in the city in different ways.
- Taxis: There is a taxi service available at each of the passenger terminals. The fare is fixed and costs around 30 euros to Atocha station and around 20 euros if the journey does not exceed 9.5 kilometres.
- Banking operations: Passengers arriving or leaving the country can exchange money and do banking operations at the various currency exchange offices and ATMs.
- Medical attention: The airport has medical rooms and specialised staff for travellers who need medical attention. For larger cases, the Adolfo Suárez is affiliated to the Ramón y Cajal Hospital, located about 12 minutes from the facilities.
- Handicapped people: The airport has a free assistance service and the facilities are adapted for passengers with reduced mobility.
